The once quiet backwater of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, is now the place where party goers come to play in hotspots that range from fun pubs to trendy loft bars.

Kota Kinabalu in Sabah offers the visitor markets, traditional Malaysian cuisine, cultural shows with native male dancers in warrior attire and relaxed people watching. But recently there has been a growth in bars, clubs and karaoke parlours. Below is a list of the best.

Shenanigan’s Fun Pub, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Kinabalu

Shenanigans has been the favourite after-hours hangout for a long time and remains one of the most popular nightspots in the city. Live bands are a popular feature of the cosy pub which caters to women on Wednesday nights when they enjoy special privileges. Mondays to Saturdays feature Happy Hours from 5-9 p.m. but Sunday offers Happy Hours all night! Open 5 p.m. – 1 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and till 2 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and the eve of public holidays.

Hunter’s Terrace (Hunter’s Pub, Café & Karaoke, Jalan Pantai

This is a great place to enjoy a drink and people watch the locals bustling along KK’s streets while sipping a beer. The atmosphere is relaxed and people talk to each other in a way not often found in bars. Scuba Divers have special privileges in Hunter’s Terrace Pub (on production of a diver’s licence). The karaoke corner is usually busy – and fun. Happy Hours from 4 – 9 p.m. daily, open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekdays and till 2 a.m. on week ends.

Blue Note in Shangri La’s Tanjung Aru Resort

A popular watering hole since 1994 with non-stop music and a friendly bar. It’s both classy and funky with that special Shangri La understated glamour. Weekends have specially flown in DJ’s who play the latest in trance, dance and house music. Happy Hours 9 – 11 p.m. Open daily from 6 p.m. until 2 p.m.

On The Waterfront. Some say the best entertainment is to be found on the Waterfront and they may be right. Here are three of the best.

BED (Best Entertainment Destination), Waterfront

A warehouse-style concept, BED caters to large crowds. A private room, aptly named the Bedroom, is available for those who prefer a more relaxed ambience. Live bands nightly, alternating with an in-house DJ. Open from 7 pm to 1 am on weekdays and till 2 am on weekends.

The Loft, Waterfront

The Loft, an after-hours favourite with the “in” crowd, offers breathtaking views of the sun setting over the South China Sea. The DJ’s entertain with both contemporary hits and retro favourites. Pool tables available upstairs, and football shown during live matches. Open daily from 3 pm to 1 am on weekdays and till 2 am on weekends.

Cock & Bull, Waterfront

The Cock & Bull is a friendly bar where a live band performs nightly and sports enthusiasts can enjoy their favourite game on two large 8-foot screens. Happy hours are from 4–9 pm daily. Open 4 pm–1 am (weekdays), till 2 am on weekends and the eve of public holidays.
