Asian spas are world renewed for service, unique treatments and great prices. In Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, several options await travelers looking for relaxation
The Spa at the Mandarin OrientalDecidedly highbrow, the Spa at the five-star Mandarin Oriental is large and luxurious. Most importantly, it offers a treatment tailored to anyone who spends his/her days chained to a desk and slumped over a computer. While traditional massage helps soothe weary neck and shoulders, the Haki Stretch and Relax is a more targeted treatment. The Spa is the only one in Asia offering this breakthrough experience. The 50-minute treatment combines soft pressure with vibrations and rhythms to release hard knots and leave you relaxed and balanced. The treatment was developed by Harald Kitz, an Austrian pianist turned physiotherapist, who noticed that all of his patients had tight neck muscles. Kitz believed that a tight neck was especially detrimental because it prevented brain signals from moving throughout the body. While most of the treatment is focused on the neck, shoulders and head, it ends with a foot massage to incorporate the Eastern philosophy that the feet are the mirror of the body and reflect the body as a whole. Jojoba Health and Beauty CentreKuala Lumpur is dotted with storefront spas touting foot massages, and it’s an experience not to be missed. Jojoba is located in the Golden Triangle area offers a clean, tranquil environment to kick up your heels and indulge in some serious tootsie time. About $17 buys an hour of foot reflexology. The rather intensely pressured massage is said to help cure everything from insomnia to headaches, but most importantly it will revive your feet after an intense day of sightseeing or shopping in the ultra high-end malls that surround the spa’s location. The Fish SpaLocated in the Pavilion Shopping Mall, the Kenko Reflexology and Fish Spa is the place to stop for the most unusual foot treatment in KL. The Fish Spa has a large pool stocked with the Garra Rufa fish, otherwise known as “Doctor Fish.” For these peculiar creatures a meal of dead or diseased foot flesh is an epicurean delight. Humans who allow the fish to feast on their feet find relief from a variety of skin conditions including psoriasis. Today at the Fish Spa, the fish provide adventurous spa goers with an intense exfoliation. The experience is said to produce a micro-massage followed by tingling sensations. The soles of the feet are said to become baby smooth and blood circulation is increased. Trying out one of the many Malaysian spa offerings will give you a taste of the culture and enrich your visit to this unique country.
