The South-East Asian Country of Malaysia is one of the most varied, exciting places in the world to visit. Travellers on holiday or vacation in Malaysia can find the Petronas Towers Skybridge in Kuala Lumpur, Mt Kinabalu on Sabah, the Sarawak Chamber in the Gunung Mulu National Park and the Hindu Shrine at Temple Cave in Batu amongst other things. Here are some facts, trivia and information that may be useful for visitors to Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur travel facts and trivia
- Until 2004, the Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world. The Petronas Towers Skybridge links the two on the 41st floor.
- To learn more about the history of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia, go to the National History Museum in the Colonial District.
- The Batu Caves, 13km away from Kuala Lumpur are great for wildly differing reasons. The Dark Cave is a hotspot for spelunking, whilst Temple Cave contains a Hindu Shrine that is visited by almost a million pilgrims in January and February each year. Each climbs a flight of 272 steps to get there.
Melaka travel facts and trivia
- Melaka is Malaysia’s main port, and has been highly prized by many foreign nations over the years. The Portuguese took it in 1511, the Dutch in 1641 and the British in 1795.
- The Stadhuys in Melaka is thought to be the oldest Dutch building in the Eastern hemisphere. It is home to Melaka’s Historical Museum, Ethnographical Museum and Literature Museum.
Malaysian Borneo travel facts and trivia
- Evidence of human life dating back 40,000 years has been found in Malaysia. Before the skull was found in the Niah Caves of Sarawak, it was thought that people had only been living in the region for 10,000 years.
- From 1838 until after the Second World War, a large chunk of Sarawak was ruled by a British family, independent of the British government. James Brooke helped Brunei fend of a rebellion, and was given the huge swathe of land to rule over in return. He appointed himself Raja Brooke, and three generations of his family ruled over the area.
- The Sarawak Chamber in the Gunung Mulu National Park is the largest cave in the world. The park is near the border with Brunei.
- Mt Kinabalu in Sabah is the highest mountain between New Guinea and the Himalayas.

- Malaysia borders Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Thailand.
- Malaysia only became a country in 1963, when Sarawak and Sabah in the north of Borneo elected to join the newly independent Malaya in a union.
