Make a trip to Kuala Lumpur's Orchid & Hibiscus Park - Take home a few souvenirs from the plant market and speak to the experts about growing these exotic plants.

Located in the touristic Lake Gardens area of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Orchid & Hibiscus Garden is a centre of expertise and excellence in the cultivation of these two attractive plant families.

History

These gardens were established in 1986, during the period when Malaysia was beginning to benefit from the proceeds of their oil industry. It is located opposite to the Bird Park and is quite close to the old Parliament buildings.

The park covers approximately two hectares of land at the highest part of the Lake Gardens area and is surrounded by mature trees and lush greenery.

The Hibiscus & Orchid Garden

The hibiscus garden occupies the entrance to the park. Walk through the borders that are planted with a varied collection of hibiscus (Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis) - Malaysia’s national flower- along with other native species of plants. The garden boasts 2,000 species of hibiscus, many of them native to Malaysia.

The Orchid Collection

The collection of hibiscus gives way to the orchid farm where you will see the orchids growing in mass in the gardens and in covered areas that shelter both plant and tourist from the harsher effects of the sun.

How Many Orchids Are There World Wide?

Orchid plants belongs to the family of Orchidacae and there are about 50,000 species of orchid all over the world. In the tropical regions approximately 3,000 species have been found to date.

The collection at the Hibiscus & Orchid Park includes 3000 tropical cultivars, amongst which 800 of them are Malaysian species.

Shopping Opportunity

For visitors to Kuala Lumur, this is a great excursion that combines beauty, education and at the weekends it also becomes a market place for orchids. Those who love orchids can purchase them as potted plants in flower, as cuttings or - for the experienced grower - as flasks of baby-orchids in a gel growing medium, ready to be transplanted.

The most convenient way of getting there is by taxi. The park is entered from the National Monument in Jalan Parlimen or from the National Mosque in Jalan Perdana.

Those who enjoy walking can take the KTM Komuter and get off at Bank Negara station. The Lake Garden is approximately 15 to 20 minutes walk from the station, and from the nearby Meridian and Hilton hotels.
